Colonial Related Vocabulary

1. colony- a land ruled by another country
2. slavery- the practice of holding people against their will and making them carry out orders
3.  raw material- a resource that can be used to make a product
4.  stock- a share of ownership in a company
5.  Jamestown Colony- the first English settlement in the “new world” (in Virginia to be specific)
6.  cash crop- a crop that people grow to sell
7.  indentured servant- a person who agreed to work for another person without pay for a certain length of time in exchange for passage to North America
8.  represent- to speak for
9.  established church- a church established and supported by the government
10.  royal colony- a colony owned by a monarch
11.  pilgrim- a person who makes a journey for religious reasons
12.  frontier- lands beyond areas that were settled by colonists
13.  industry - the businesses that make one kind of product or provide one kind of service
14.  exports- products sent to other countries
15.  imports- products brought into the country (from other countries)
16.  Plymouth Colony- the second English Colony established in 1620 by the Pilgrims  (in Massachusetts)
17.  plantations- large farms
