Social Studies: Governing the Nation Vocabulary



Greetings students and families, 

I am out at a training (Monday)... so there is no vocab homework for Monday.  
We will begin with our Social Studies work (the Constitution and government) on Tuesday. 

Social Studies:  Governing the Nation Vocabulary

1. convention – an important meeting
2.  federal system- a system of government where power is shared by a national government and state governments
3. republic- people choose representatives to run the government
4. compromise –an agreement reached by each side giving up some part of what it wants
5.  principle- a rule for action
6.  legislative branch- the lawmaking branch of our government
ex. congress= house of representatives (based on population) and the senate (2 from each state)
7.  separation of powers- the sharing of power between the 3 branches of government so that on branch cannot control the government.
8.  executive branch- the President is the chief leader who has the  power to enforce laws that are made by congress.
9.  electoral college- the group of electors who votes for the president (citizens vote for them)
10.  veto- to reject
11. impeach- to accuse someone of crimes (often associated with the president being accused of a crime) 
12. judicial branch- the court system
13. justices- judges
14.  amendments- changes
15. ratify- to approve
16. Cabinet- people who advise the president
17.  political party- a group that tries to elect officials who will support its policies

Slavery and the Underground Railroad

1. middle passage-  the journey across the Atlantic Ocean from the W. coast of Africa to the Caribbean: the   longest part of the journey of the slave ships sailing to the Caribbean or the Americas

2. parliament- the legislature of Great Britain, made up of the House of Lords and the House of Commons

3. abolition- the legal prohibition and ending of slavery

4. abolitionist- a person who advocated or supported the abolition  of slavery

5. freedom- the state of being free  or at liberty

6. underground railroad - a system for helping fugitive slaves to escape into Canada or other places of safety

7. conductor-  a leader, guide, director; a person who helped slaves travel along the underground railroad

8. emancipation- being freed; liberation

9. philanthropist-  a person who performs charitable or benevolent actions and has a love of mankind

10. humanitarian- a person actively engaged in promoting human  welfare and social reforms, as a     philanthropist.

11. advocate-   noun: a person who speaks or writes in support or defense of a person or cause
                          verb: to speak for or write in favor of; to recommend publicly

12. activist a person who is a vigorous advocate of a cause, especially a political cause.

13. reform- as a verb: to change to a better state;  improve by alteration, substitution, abolition

14.  13th amendment- declares slavery as illegal (1865)

15. Uncle Tom’s Cabin - is an anti-slavery novel by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe. It was published     in 1852 and helped to support the abolitionist cause

16. mutiny- a revolt or rebellion against any authority

17. revolt -to break away from or rise against authority
