Colonial Work

Dear Room 12 Families,

Colonial Days February 12th  @11:30

Students have begun working on researching their Colonial Region. They are preparing posters to teach the class what life was like in their colonies.   This week for homework students will be thinking about their independent mini-project and creative assignment relating to the colonies.  Students are to create a colonial persona, they may decide on their age (10-50), gender, name, job/chores, house, etc.   They have been assigned different classes (First/Upper, Middle, Poorer and slave).  They will be attempting to be “in character” during colonial days to make things a little more fun and interesting (because boys outfits can be a little easier for some, I know there were girls that were wanting to dress in the boys outfits and that is why we will have flexibility with the persona they choose).

Clothing ideas:  despite the desires of some of our upper class girls wanting extravagant gowns… we are going to try to keep things simple.  I do not want anyone to have to buy anything for this.

Some ideas:  kaki pants (or any pants) rolled to the knee (baseball pants also work great),  knee high socks, white collared shirt, long skirts, scarves,  apron,  bonnets, plain shoes (there are some great you tube videos via  HistoricMountVernon on how to make paper sun bonnets and tricorn hats that can make costumes fun, too.

Some project ideas to get you started…
*sew a small quilt (or the beginnings of one)         * make a model of a colonial town
* homemade candles      *weaving      * make a horn book    *silhouette  art     *handmade pillow
*corn husk doll       *clothes pin doll     *rag doll     *cross stitch/ embroidery
*handmade baskets      *make and example of a horn book
*tin work (making something out of tin can eg. lantern)
*baking projects

There are a lot of great craft ideas on the internet, and I linked a few to my blog as well. This mini project will be due on February 12th and there is  a written paragraph about the project that was made.

Individual Project and Paragraph

Individual colonial mini project and paragraph write up are due Feb. 12th   and will be showcased that day during “colonial days”.

Your project should relate to our theme of study:  Colonial America and reflect the thought and effort you put into the assignment.  This is meant to be a fun little project not a big, stressful one!

Paragraph includes details about what you made, how did you make it, and why you chose that project and how it related to our colonial area of study.  Neatness, correct grammar, spelling and punctuation are important.
