Homework the week of October 13th

Students are to record either their own personal waste or family's waste.  

This can be done for 1 day, 2 days, 3 days or 4 day!  Whatever is most  convenient!

Students do not need to empty trash... just check off items as they are thrown away or recycled...  You may record: trash/ recycle/  compost if you do not just have  trash.

The purpose is for students to see how much they are using and ?throwing away or recycling"  and to think of ways they might reduce their waste!

Conservation vocab.


Conservation Vocabulary

1.             watershed- n.  an area of land that that catches rain (and other precipitation)  and flows into a body of water (marsh, stream, river, ocean, groundwater).  An area of land drained by a body of water

2. audit- v.  to conduct an official examination/survey of

3.  plastic –n. a synthetic material composed of repeating chainlike-molecules called polymers. They are usually derived from fossil fuels.
4.  gyre- n. a ring-like system of ocean currents

5. albatross- n. a very large oceanic bird. (some have wingspans greater than 10 feet)

6. PSA (public service announcement)- n. a message to the public to raise awareness about an issue and to changes attitudes and behavior

7. conservation- n.  the act of preserving, protecting or restoring.  (protection)

8.  empower- v. to make stronger and more confident

9.  density- n. the compactness of a substance.  The ratio of a material’s mass to its volume. Density is the same value for a certain type of material, regardless of the size of the object.
10. buoyancy- n. the ability or tendency to flout in water (or other fluid)

11.  photodegrade-v. to be decomposed by light
12.  biodegrade- v. to be decomposed by bacteria or other living organisms
