body systems


Body Systems Vocabulary

1. tissue- a group of cells that work together to do a certain job

2. organ – a group of tissues that work together to do a certain job

3. digestive system- the organ system that breaks down food into chemical nutrients the body can use. The stomach and intestines are 2 of its main organs.

4. excretory system- the system that removes wastes from the body.  It is made up of the kidneys and the bladder.

5. circulatory system- a group of organs that transports needed materials in your blood throughout the body.  It is made up of the heart, veins and arteries.

6. respiratory system- a group of organs and tissues that exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide between your body and the environment.  Its main organs are the lungs.

7.  nervous system- the system that transmits information, in the form of electrochemical impulses, throughout the body. It is made up of  the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.

8. brain- an organ that controls body activities, movement, thought, memory and emotion.  It receives and interprets impulses from the entire body.

9. heart- an organ of the circulatory system that pumps blood throughout the body

10. stomach- a baglike organ of the digestive system that has strong muscles that mix food with digestive juices.

11. kidney- an organ that filters out the wastes from our blood, helping to excrete them from out body. (humans have 2 kidneys)

12.  lung- an organ that helps the blood absorb oxygen.  (we have 2)

13. capillary- a tiny blood vessel that helps materials exchange between the blood and the bodies cells

14. artery- a blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body

15. vein- a blood vessel that carries blood from different parts of the body back to the heart.

16 nerve- fibers of neurons that carry sensory and motor information throughout the body in the form of electrical impulses (how the body sends signals back to the spinal cord and to the brain).

MONDAY- fill out body charts with definitions under the words or on a separate paper if needed
TUESDAY- write the definitions of words that were not on the chart
WEDNESDAY- crossword
THURSDAY- Study (need to know definitions and be able to find where body parts are on a diagram like the one in your homework).
FRIDAY- Test

11/4-11/8    Decide on Person (think of top 5 preferences from the list)
11/11- 11/15   Gather Research Items  (3 sources minimum) Due in Class on the 12th
11/18-11/21  Work Time in Class (Take notes on from resources, do research)
12/2- 12/6 Work Time in Class (Work on biography article)
12/9-12/13 Work time in Class  (Work on final biography article and poem)

*complete all other parts of the project at home that you are unable to complete in class

FINAL PROJECT IS DUE December 18, 2013


You will need to use at least 1 NON FICTION Library Book (class, school, public) and at least 2 of the following resources to obtain your information:
*Internet (reputable websites-see links on my blog) If using Wikipedia, must use 2    internet sources.
*Social Studies Textbook
*Encyclopedia
*Magazines
*Documentary

*Write an “I am Poem” from the perspective of your famous person.  See hand out for details/ideas.

Section IV:  Two Page Biographical Article: (handwritten or typed 5 paragraph minimum) 
*Introduction

*Family history (when and where they were born, what their childhood was like, interests they had growing up, any important information about their family or any hardships they had to overcome)

*Why, how, when and where they became famous.  What should we remember this person for?   What was the result of their actions/work?  Why are the important?  How did they make a difference?

*Is there any interesting information we should know about your person?

*How/when did they die?  Are there any memorials, celebrations honoring them?

* Conclusion

Section V:  Visuals
*Please include a photograph, drawing or painting of your famous person and an image related to why they are famous.
*You may include additional maps, guides, inserts, drawings or pictures that relate to your famous person and his/her life for Extra Credit.  Please Label this section Extra Credit.

Biography Homework (11/12-11/15)


This week your homework is to gather Research for your Biography

Remember you need 1 published source (preferably a book but magazine okay) and at least 2 other sources.  Please have all sources in class by Friday, November 15th.  This may need to include a trip to the public library.

If possible please print information off of the internet (be sure to include the website url used, date found and the title and author)

Remember when searching online:
Online sources (Think about WHAT IS A TRUSTWORTHY website)
-Does it look PROFESSIONAL (is the information from a news agency, university, government, encyclopedia, .GOV OR .EDU)
-AUTHOR     (who is the author?  are they qualified?)
-BIAS (click on the ABOUT US LINK to find more about the author/purpose)
-IN DEPTH (does the information include statistics, data, links and cites other sources, give facts not opinions)
-ACCURATE (check the with other sources)
-UP TO DATE



Please only start to read your sources this week.  Do not take notes yet.



We will be having class time next week to read the information and take notes.  As we get ready to take notes next week, please remember we cannot plagiarize.  Instead we want to paraphrase.
Paraphrasing is not changing a few words around or replacing words with synonyms. You have to rewrite the material using your own words. One good way to be sure that you're paraphrasing fairly is to follow these steps:
1.     read passage carefully (Find the main ideas/highlight important words and phrases) and reread
2.     close the book/magazine/article and write the important information that you remember
in your own words
3.     check back with the original source to make sure you included the important information      and that you used your own words
4.     be sure to cite your source (in your bibliography)  you might also include the source in your writing…
