in honor of earth day, we watched this video to inspire ways that we can live more environmentally friendly.

Power Point Project

Informative Power Point on topic of your choice

Students will be researching a topic of their choice that relates to an important topic in either social studies or science.  This is a list that is just to get ideas going… your child may choose another topic that is important to them (teacher approval needed).

Social Issues

Mental Illness                Fair Trade World War II                 Effects of TV on Kids
War in Iraq                    War in Afghanistan                           Effects of Video games on Kids
Effects of Violent Media on Society (TV, Video games, Movies)

Science Issues
Dolphin (as bycatch, problems with dolphins in captivity)
Shark Overfishing                        Great Pacific Garbage Patch (Ocean Pollution)
Whaling                    “Green” technology                  Deforestation            Climate change
Problems/Concerns about animals in captivity
Air pollution            Recycling                 Alternative energy
Endangered Species (choose 1 animal to focus on)
Extinct Species (choose 1 animal to focus on)
Space Exploration
    -Apollo missions (to moon)
   - Cassini Mission (photograph Saturn)
   -Curiosity Mission (to mars)

They will then create a power point presentation on the subject:
1. Teaching about the topic/issue, including possible different perspectives and opinions on the issue.
2. giving their own opinion about the issue

Your Presentation will have :
1. a minimum of 8 slides, with at least one image (picture) on each slide
2. it must have an introduction, body and conclusion (thought it doesn’t have to be in paragraph format)
3.  a question page- where questions are given about the topic  (as part of presentation can be used to introduce or conclude presentation, the answers should be given at some point)
4. student opinion page
5. bibliography

Weather: Science Test Study Guide

*We will go over any questions you may have on the study guide in class on Wednesday

*Test on Friday

Here is what you need to know….

1. Be able to describe what the following are and how they form:

Hurricanes (and storm surge)

Tornados

Thunderstorms

types of precipitation (drizzle, rain, sleet, snow, hail)

2. Cloud types and what type of weather they indicate:

Cirrus clouds

Cumulonimbus clouds

Cumulus clouds

Stratus clouds

3. The water cycle: evaporation, condensation, precipitation

4. How air temperature affects density

5. How the ocean affects weather

6. Read a data table and graph that shows temperature change:

For example: What was the temperature change from day 1 to day 6?

Temperatures in New York City

Day

Temperature

1

43 ˚F

2

53 ˚F

3

Weather Vocabulary definitions

Weather Vocabulary Definitions

1. weather – the state of the atmosphere; most weather occurs in the troposphere and is caused by pressure differences and changes in air, heat and moisture

2. atmosphere- the gasses surrounding earth (made up of the troposphere and stratosphere)

3. meteorology - The study of weather

4. troposphere- the lowest layer of the atmosphere (6-12 miles) above the earth and is where most weather occurs.

5. ozone- The gas the protects the earth from the Sun’s harmful rays

6. current – a large portion of air (or water) moving in a certain direction

7. convection current - The upward and downward movement of air in the atmosphere

8. humidity - The amount of water vapor in the air

9. precipitation (includes: drizzle, rain, sleet, snow, hail that fall to the earth

10. wind- The horizontal movement of air

11. monsoon - A monsoon is a seasonal wind, found especially in Asia that reverses direction between summer and winter and often brings heavy rains and a flooding period as well as a drought period

12. tornado - A violent rotating column of air that extends downward from thunderstorm clouds and touches the ground

13. tsunami - A very large ocean wave caused by an underwater earthquake or volcanic eruption.

14. hurricane- A large rotating tropical storm with wind speeds of at least 74 miles per hour

15. earthquake- A sudden and violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the earth's crust or volcanic action

16. thunderstorm- a storm with wind, rain, hail and lightning

17. thermometer - An instrument used to measure temperature

18. barometer - An instrument used to measure pressure

19. anemometer - An instrument used to measure wind speed

20. hygrometer - An instrument used to measure the moisture in the air/humidity
