Monday 5/5- complete as much of the study guide as possible (bring to class Tuesday we will go over questions)
Tuesday 5/6- study for test be sure study guide is complete (it will be turned in for credit)
Wednesday 5/7- test  (you may use study guide and science notebook)

Weather Vocabulary Definitions

1. weather – the state of the atmosphere; most weather occurs in the troposphere and is caused by pressure differences and changes in air, heat and moisture
2. atmosphere- the gasses surrounding earth (made up of the troposphere and stratosphere)
3. meteorology - The study of weather
4. troposphere- the lowest layer of the atmosphere (6-12 miles) above the earth and is where most weather occurs.
5. ozone- The gas the protects the earth from the Sun’s harmful rays
6. current – a large portion of air (or water) moving in a certain direction
7. convection current - The upward and downward movement of air in the atmosphere
8. humidity - The amount of water vapor in the air
9. precipitation (includes: drizzle, rain, sleet, snow, hail that fall to the earth
10. wind- The horizontal movement of air
11. monsoon - A monsoon is a seasonal wind, found especially in Asia that reverses direction between summer and winter and often brings heavy rains and a flooding period as well as a drought period
12. tornado - A violent rotating column of air that extends downward from thunderstorm clouds and touches the ground
13. tsunami - A very large ocean wave caused by an underwater earthquake or volcanic eruption.
14. hurricane- A large rotating tropical storm with wind speeds of at least 74 miles per hour
15. earthquake- A sudden and violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the earth's crust or volcanic action
16. thunderstorm- a storm with wind, rain, hail and lightning
17. thermometer - An instrument used to measure temperature
18. barometer - An instrument used to measure pressure
19. anemometer - An instrument used to measure wind speed
20. hygrometer  - An instrument used to measure the moisture in the air/humidity

SHARKWATER VOCABULARY

1. pirate - a person who robs or commits illegal violence at sea or on the shores of the sea

2. poaching- the illegal practice of trespassing on another's property to hunt or steal game

3. trespass- a wrongful entry upon the lands (or territory) of another.

4. gills- the respiratory organ of aquatic animals, as fish, that breathe oxygen dissolved in water.

5. lateral line- the line of sensory structures along the head and sides of fishes that allow the animal to  detect water currents, pressure changes and vibrations.

6. shark finning – refers to the removal and retention of shark fins and the discard at sea of the carcass. The shark is most often still alive when it is tossed back into the water. Unable to swim, the shark slowly sinks toward the bottom where it is eaten alive by other fish.

7. fact - something that actually exists; a reality; a truth

8. myth- any invented story, idea, or concept

9. predator- any organism that exists by preying (eating) upon other organisms.

10. prey- an animal hunted or seized for food

11. extinct- no longer in existence

12. endangered    - threatened with danger,  threatened with extinction

13. vulnerable- capable of or susceptible to being wounded or hurt

14. food web- a  group of interlinked food chains

15./16. preservation/ conservation – the act of keeping something  safe, alive or in existence

HOMEWORK:
Tuesday:  Create your environmentally friendly dream house- label features
Wednesday: Crossword Puzzle
Thursday: Write sentences or a story/article that uses 10 vocabulary words
